And if you will be heading to the Derby (May 1st this year) you may want to write down PETER BEATON’s recipe for the perfect mint julep (begin the day ahead for best results):

First make the syrup: combine 2 cups of sugar & 2 cups of water and boil for 5 minutes. Let cool. Place in a container with several sprigs of fresh mint. Refrigerate overnight.

When it's time for cocktails, pour 2 ounces of bourbon and 1 tablespoon of syrup over crushed ice in a chilled mint julep cup and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. ~
